Genesis 2:24

#A2Z Challenge - Genesis 2:24

Genesis 2:24 records the moment that God, immediately after creating woman from the rib of man, establishes marriage – the union of a male and a female – as the foundation of the family, the child rearing unit. The meaning of this is as clear as mountain air: God intends for children to be reared by a man and a woman who are committed to one another for life. Period.

Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh.

I won’t lie, Ry and I had a rough start to our marriage. We were young (only 18 and 19 when we married) and had a lot of growing up to do. I really wish that we had made it a point to study the bible together as newlyweds; but hindsight is 20-20 and the future is cloudy.

Life on Easy Street is a Lie

The truth is that no one deserves a problem-free life.  In fact, the Bible says the very opposite:  John 16:33 says…“In this world, you will have trouble.  But take heart!  I have overcome the world.”

“You won’t be given more than you can handle.”  This simply isn’t true.  If this were true, then we could rely on ourselves and our own strength to get us through really terrible times.  When people struggle through great difficulties in life that they cannot handle alone, some turn to empty escapes such as drugs, alcohol and even suicide to numb the pain.

Only true comfort comes from God.  2 Cor 1:4 says that God “comforts us in all our troubles…”  In verse 9, Paul says that he was afraid for his life, but that “this happened that we might not rely on ourselves but on God.”

What we are going through right now has many purposes.  One of those purposes is that God is showing us that we need to rely on Him in every facet of our lives and not on ourselves.

Connected To The Vine

Read: John 15: 1-8

We have been grafted into the vine (Christ) by our faith in Him. We need to continue to be ‘in Christ’ to be productive for Him.

If a branch is cut off from the tree and tossed to one side, it can no longer produce. It doesn’t have the life of the tree in it. It is no longer connected to the source of life. This is how it is in the spiritual realm. Being cut off from union with Christ – we no longer are connected to our source of power. The power to live the Christian life, and to overcome the enemy; to know the joy of the Lord despite our circumstances, and to have intimate fellowship with God and hope for eternity. We need to stay vitally united to the vine (Christ) to tap into the resources that are ours through Christ.

Unexpected Grace

“Jesus answered her, ‘If you knew the gift of God and who it is that asks you for a drink, you would have asked him and he would have given you living water.’” John 4:10

Grace often comes as a surprise when we are least expecting it. There was a woman who went to draw water at a well. It was around noon…the hottest part of the day. She wasn’t looking for anything, just going about her day, doing her duty as she always had. She had no idea someone was waiting for her. She could not have guessed the surprise she was about to encounter.

“Draw me water,” Jesus asked. He had been sitting there, tired and thirsty from his day of traveling.

Shocked and a bit startled, she wondered how he could ask this of her? She was a woman, and a Samaritan woman whom the Jews despised. Asking for water would make him ceremonially unclean.

Jesus told her that he could give her “living water” so that she would never thirst again. He baffled her once more. Jesus then revealed she had had five husbands and was living with one whom she was not married to. He caught her attention a third time.

A Bad Cup Of Coffee

A Bad Cup of Coffee

“…Be ye holy; for I am holy” 1 Peter 1:16
A Bad Cup Of Coffee
I think everyone disagrees on what makes a good cup of coffee. With today’s hot coffee trend, we try all kinds of flavorings and different ways of experiencing coffee. It used to be basically served black or with cream and sugar. There wasn’t much variety.

Nowadays, people like coffee served and brewed a lot of different ways. We tend to disagree on what’s good. What we usually agree on is the basics on what makes a bad cup of coffee. It can be weak, bitter, stale, cold, or soured by something we put in it and we’d probably all agree that it tastes bad. Face it. No one likes to drink a bad cup of coffee.

The Wicked May Prosper – But Not For Long

Read: Psalm 37: 1-20

“Fret not yourself because of evildoers, neither be envious against those who work unrighteousness (that which is not upright or in right standing with God).” (V: 1).

We may look around and see the wicked prospering and wonder ‘Why’? The many that go against God’s standards may mock and ridicule you (V: 12). They may have everything in the material and look down on you (V: 16). But they will meet their fate in the end. The Lord laughs at their wickedness – because He knows the day will come when they will be cast down – and the righteous will live forever.

What the Lord tells us to do is to trust in Him; delight ourselves in Him; commit our way to Him. He will then bring it to pass and give us the desires of our hearts. God doesn’t want us to focus on what the wicked are doing, or what they may have. But rather to focus on Him, and what He will do in our lives. We need to lean on Him, rely on Him and to commit everything to Him. He will make us as light shining forth (V: 16). As verses 7-8 say, “Be still and rest in the Lord; wait for Him and patiently lean yourself upon Him; fret not yourself because of him who prospers in his way, because of the man who brings wicked devices to pass. Cease from anger and forsake wrath; fret not yourself – it tends only to evildoing.”

Let our hope be in the Lord. He will vindicate us in the end. If you are having a hard time right now, give it over to the Lord. Continually come to Him and delight yourself in Him. Don’t let anger get a hold – for the wicked ‘know not what they’re doing’. Trust in God – He won’t let you down. He knows what’s going on, and He will have the last word!

Treasures of wickedness profit nothing, but righteousness (moral and spiritual rectitude in every area and relation) delivers from death. ~ Proverbs 10: 2 (AMP).

For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world and forfeits his life ? Or what would a man give as an exchange for his life [in the kingdom of God]? ~ Matthew 16: 26 (AMP)

Standing Firm

“There was never anyone so good that she was exempt from trials and temptations.”
— Anonymous

It is so important to remember that each person will have their failings and strengths, and no matter what we, or anyone else thinks, no one will have that hunky-dory rainbow sunshine and glitter day ALL of the time. And honestly, who would want to? You can’t find out how strong you are if you are never ever tested!

Women With Purpose

What you’ve purposed in my heart,
Lord, give me strength to do
That I may carry out your work
Bringing glory unto you.

Read: Ephesians 1: 1-14

We read here how we all were, “…foreordained (chosen and appointed beforehand) in accordance with His purpose, who works out everything in agreement with the counsel and design of His will.” (V: 11)

God had planned and designed our lives before we were even born. He has given us a purpose, plan and destiny to fulfil. He has picked us out and made us His own. He has set us apart to carry out His will. We are women with purpose. Have you found what God’s purpose is for you? Do you believe He has an awesome plan for your life? Jeremiah 29: 11 says, “For I know the thoughts and plans that I have for you, says the Lord, thoughts and plans for welfare and peace and not for evil, to give you hope in your final outcome.”

God has a wonderful plan for our lives to bring about good. We need to realize that plan. If you don’t yet know what God has for you to do – ask Him to reveal it to you. Ask Him for a ‘vision’ for your life. He will make known His will and His purpose for your life (V: 9). For each one of us is unique and has a unique plan that only we can fulfil. And we are well able to do it. God will equip us to carry it out as Hebrews 13: 21 says, “Strengthen (complete, perfect) and make you what you ought to be and equip you with everything good that you may carry out His will; works in you and accomplishes that which is pleasing in His sight, through Jesus Christ (the Messiah); to whom be the glory forever and ever (to the ages of the ages). Amen (so be it).”

Don’t be afraid to rise up in what God has laid upon your heart to do. You will not regret it. It will give new meaning and purpose for your life.

For those whom He foreknew [of whom He was aware and loved beforehand]. He also destined from the beginning to be moulded into the image of His son , that He might become the firstborn among many brethren. And those whom He thus foreordained, He also called; and those whom He called, He also justified (acquitted, made righteous, putting them into right standing with Himself). And those whom He justified, He also glorified .
~ Romans 8:29-30 (AMP)

2 Peter 3:9

The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.

John 5:16-30

16 And therefore did the Jews persecute Jesus, and sought to slay him, because he had done these things on the sabbath day.
17 But Jesus answered them,My Father worketh hitherto, and I work.
18 Therefore the Jews sought the more to kill him, because he not only had broken the sabbath, but said also that God was his Father, making himself equal with God.
19 Then answered Jesus and said unto them,Verily, verily, I say unto you, The Son can do nothing of himself, but what he seeth the Father do: for what things soever he doeth, these also doeth the Son likewise.
20 For the Father loveth the Son, and sheweth him all things that himself doeth: and he will shew him greater works than these, that ye may marvel.
21 For as the Father raiseth up the dead, and quickeneth them; even so the Son quickeneth whom he will.
22 For the Father judgeth no man, but hath committed all judgment unto the Son:
23 That all men should honour the Son, even as they honour the Father. He that honoureth not the Son honoureth not the Father which hath sent him.
24 Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life.
25 Verily, verily, I say unto you, The hour is coming, and now is, when the dead shall hear the voice of the Son of God: and they that hear shall live.
26 For as the Father hath life in himself; so hath he given to the Son to have life in himself;
27 And hath given him authority to execute judgment also, because he is the Son of man.
28 Marvel not at this: for the hour is coming, in the which all that are in the graves shall hear his voice,
29 And shall come forth; they that have done good, unto the resurrection of life; and they that have done evil, unto the resurrection of damnation.
30 I can of mine own self do nothing: as I hear, I judge: and my judgment is just; because I seek not mine own will, but the will of the Father which hath sent me.

Luke 17:20-25

20 And when he was demanded of the Pharisees, when the kingdom of God should come, he answered them and said, The kingdom of God cometh not with observation:
21 Neither shall they say, Lo here! or, lo there! for, behold, the kingdom of God is within you.
22 And he said unto the disciples, The days will come, when ye shall desire to see one of the days of the Son of man, and ye shall not see it.
23 And they shall say to you, See here; or, see there: go not after them, nor follow them.
24 For as the lightning, that lighteneth out of the one part under heaven, shineth unto the other part under heaven; so shall also the Son of man be in his day.
25 But first must he suffer many things, and be rejected of this generation.

Luke 12:30-34

30 For all these things do the nations of the world seek after: and your Father knoweth that ye have need of these things.
31 But rather seek ye the kingdom of God; and all these things shall be added unto you.
32 Fear not, little flock; for it is your Father’s good pleasure to give you the kingdom.
33 Sell that ye have, and give alms; provide yourselves bags which wax not old, a treasure in the heavens that faileth not, where no thief approacheth, neither moth corrupteth.
34 For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.

Jeremiah 17:7-8

7 Blessed is the man that trusteth in the LORD, and whose hope the LORD is.
8 For he shall be as a tree planted by the waters, and that spreadeth out her roots by the river, and shall not see when heat cometh, but her leaf shall be green; and shall not be careful in the year of drought, neither shall cease from yielding fruit.

Hebrews 13:5

Let your conversation be without covetousness; and be content with such things as ye have: for he hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee.

Exodus 20:17

Thou shalt not covet thy neighbour’s house, thou shalt not covet thy neighbour’s wife, nor his manservant, nor his maidservant, nor his ox, nor his ass, nor any thing that is thy neighbour’s.

Acts 20:28

Take heed therefore unto yourselves, and to all the flock, over the which the Holy Ghost hath made you overseers, to feed the church of God, which he hath purchased with his own blood.

2 Timothy 3:15-17

15 And that from a child thou hast known the holy scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus.
16 All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:
17 That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works.

Psalm 100:4

Enter into his gates with thanksgiving, and into his courts with praise: be thankful unto him, and bless his name.
